Waltham Forest Council is looking to appoint a 0.6 WTE Consultant in Public Health/Public Health Medicine on a permanent basis, to lead on child and maternal health, and community safety. The successful candidate will be technically able, and be committed to tackling health inequalities and to leading a successful programme of public health responsibility within Local Government.

Waltham Forest is a vibrant, diverse home to approximately 260,000 residents in East London, easily accessible from central London by train and underground, and was the 2019 London Borough of Culture and the MJ Local Authority of the Year. The Public Health team has well developed relationships across the organisation and with partners. Led by the Director of Public Health for Waltham Forest, the team is based in the Families Directorate.

The leaders of the borough are firmly committed to public health, and the principles of early intervention and prevention, making this an excellent place to work in collaboration to achieve genuine improvements for residents. Improving Life Chances, with a strong focus on children and young people, has been a key priority locally, and remains so as we look to adjust locally to a world affected by COVID-19.

We are also a team committed to providing a stimulating environment within which to work, running monthly reflective practice sessions, journal clubs and providing opportunities for personal development through training, education, shadowing and on-the-job learning.

The role

The successful candidate(s) will bring energy, drive and innovation to make a difference, working through the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and working to improve outcomes for children, young people and parents in Waltham Forest.

The role will involve directing the work of a team of at least two public health strategists or senior strategists, and being a member of the public health Senior Management Team.

Lead areas will include:

  • Child and Maternal Health
  • Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Commissioning of the Healthy Child Programme
  • Community Safety (including violence reduction)
  • Immunisations

The successful candidates will bring energy, drive and innovation to make a difference, working through the challenges to improve outcomes for people in Waltham Forest.

The post holder will work in co-operation with other colleagues within Public Health, council directorates (especially the integrated commissioning function and children’s services), the Clinical Commissioning Group, the wider NHS and the voluntary sector, and will need to establish and maintain a wide range of working relationships. The post holder will need to develop a good understanding of the context of services in the borough which impact on health and health inequalities.
