Assistant Headteacher with SENDCo Responsibility

We are looking to appoint an outstanding leader who will join the Senior Leadership Team as Assistant Headteacher to lead and develop our Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) provision and remove barriers to success for all our pupils with SEND. As the SENDCo you will have responsibility for leading, developing and managing a high standard of provision for learners with SEND.

We are looking to appoint an inspirational leader who will:

  • Be an outstanding teacher with a passion for teaching
  • Have a detailed knowledge (or working towards the acquisition of the NPQSENCO award) of SEND Code of Practice and up to date knowledge of statutory obligations and high impact interventions
  • Be passionate about inclusive practice and equality of opportunity.
  • Raise achievement across school for SEND pupils through excellent teaching and learning.
  • Be an excellent communicator.

The inclusion team includes an assistant SENDCo and a team of SEND TAs, for which the successful candidate will have line management responsibility. Leading on behaviour through our PRIDE positive traits will be part of the role. Please note that some class teacher responsibility will be included.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant difference to the life chances of our pupils. We are a small school with 4 form entry at secondary and 2 form entry at primary. The size of each year group means that staff get to know individual students and their families really well and form excellent relationships.  The school has a ‘community’ feel built on excellent relationships between stakeholders.

George Mitchell is within walking distance from Leyton underground and Leyton Midland stations, and also offers onsite parking. We also offer a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme, and a range of benefits including Cycle2Work and free eye tests.

Please explore our website or come and visit to find out more about us, our team and the school. If you have the passion, commitment and resilience to make a significant difference in this role I would be delighted to receive your application.

We welcome visitors to the school. Please contact us if you would like to arrange a visit. We must receive your application by 9am on Monday 11th May 2026: please note that we cannot accept applications via CV.

Equal Opportunities

Waltham Forest is a diverse borough where diversity is valued and is integral to both, service delivery and employment of its staff. The Council is proud of its rich mix of communities and as the largest employer in the area, it works hard to respond to the changing needs of its population. We use our statutory duties on race, gender and disability equality and best practice in respect of age, faith and sexual orientation to ensure equality of opportunity in the workplace. The Council is committed to meeting its 4 equality objectives: - Promoting equality of opportunity - Opposing all forms of discrimination, intolerance and disadvantage - Ensuring our workforce reflects the diverse communities of Waltham Forest at all levels. - Providing fair, appropriate, accessible and excellent Services to all. Respecting Diversity is a core Council value. To support the above and reduce the risk of bias in its recruitment activities, the council is operating an anonymous shortlisting process, which hides personal information that can identify individuals until their application has been considered for shortlisting. The council also operates a scheme whereby, for jobs graded up to and including scale SO2, internal candidates are considered first. This includes those candidates who self-identify as having a disability for the purposes of the Disability Confident scheme. For more information, please refer to our recruitment and selection policy
