Teacher of Mathematics

North Birkbeck School (Hawkswood Group)

This is an opportunity to teach Mathematics in a calm, well-supported environment where relationships matter, class sizes are small, and staff wellbeing is genuinely prioritised.

North Birkbeck is a newly established short-term specialist provision for young people aged 11–16 who are at risk of exclusion or have been permanently excluded from mainstream school. As part of the Hawkswood Group of Schools, we provide high-quality alternative provision with a clear focus on stabilisation, reintegration, and long-term positive outcomes. This role is part of the planned school growth.

Our pupils are often capable learners who have experienced disruption to their education and require consistency, structure, and relational practice to re-engage successfully. Some pupils will have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), most commonly related to social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.

Across the Hawkswood Group, we are committed to building resilience, social skills, and positive mental wellbeing so that pupils can return to education with confidence and purpose.

About the role

You will teach Mathematics to small groups of pupils, with class sizes of up to 10 students, supported by a consistent in-class adult. This structure allows for strong relationships, adaptive teaching, and effective behaviour support.

You will have the professional freedom to adapt the mathematics curriculum to meet individual needs, prioritising confidence, engagement, and progress over pace. Assessment is purposeful and proportionate, with no unnecessary data burden.

The role focuses on:

  • Rebuilding mathematical confidence and closing key gaps
  • Teaching Maths in a structured, accessible and calm way
  • Supporting pupils to regulate and engage positively with learning
  • Working collaboratively with support staff and external professionals

You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, working closely with Speech and Language Therapists, CAMHS, Educational Psychologists, and keyworkers to provide a joined-up approach to support and learning.

What we are looking for

We are seeking a Mathematics teacher who is motivated by impact and believes in the potential of every young person.

You will:

  • Be committed to high-quality teaching and learning
  • Value relationships, consistency and relational practice
  • Be reflective, resilient and solution-focused
  • Believe education can change life trajectories
  • Be open to learning and developing your practice

The ability to teach an additional subject would be advantageous, though not essential.

Previous experience in a PRU or special school is not required. A strong commitment to inclusion, adaptability, and professional curiosity are essential.

What we can offer

  • Class sizes of up to 9 students, with consistent in-class support
  • A values-driven organisation with a strong moral purpose and ethical practice
  • A clear commitment to trauma-informed, restorative and relational approaches
  • A highly supportive and collaborative staff team
  • High-quality CPD and clear pathways for professional development
  • Leadership that is visible, supportive and encourages innovation
  • A strong focus on staff wellbeing, with staff feedback consistently describing an excellent work–life balance
  • Purposeful systems that minimise unnecessary workload, including proportionate assessment and streamlined expectations
  • High aspirations for pupils alongside clear, consistent expectations for behaviour in school and the wider community
