Leadership Projects and Policy Officer PO4
The Leadership Office is a fast-paced and high-demand environment at the very heart of the Council. Its objective is to ensure the Chief Executive and Leader are able to carry out their roles in overseeing the delivery of the Council’s strategic priorities for the benefit of our residents and employees, as well as responding to urgent and often unpredictable needs that arise in our borough and organisation.
We are recruiting to two new and exciting vacancies for Leadership Policy and Project Officers that will play a critical part in providing high quality policy and public affairs advice and project support to the Council’s Chief Executive and Leader, including:
- Coordinating and writing briefings, external correspondence and speech writing
- Managing public affairs strategies, delivering effective approaches for lobbying and engagement
- Coordinating specific priority projects policy areas, working with the corporate change, strategy and communications teams
- Communicating and collaborating with colleagues in all departments on behalf of the Chief Executive and Leader
This role will give the right candidates the opportunity to experience direct working with the Chief Executive and Leader, developing their skills and awareness of the workings at the most senior level of the organisation. They will gain experience working on a wide variety of high priority policy, public affairs, events and change projects.
We’re looking for people that enjoy taking a hands-on, can-do approach and are confident in bringing their creativity and ideas to the table. They will need to have a strong policy background and demonstrate experience of working in a similarly paced environment meeting tight deadlines and adjusting to changing needs. They will need a sound understanding of the political workings of local government.

Equal Opportunities
Waltham Forest is a diverse borough where diversity is valued and is integral to both, service delivery and employment of its staff. The Council is proud of its rich mix of communities and as the largest employer in the area, it works hard to respond to the changing needs of its population. We use our statutory duties on race, gender and disability equality and best practice in respect of age, faith and sexual orientation to ensure equality of opportunity in the workplace. The Council is committed to meeting its 4 equality objectives: - Promoting equality of opportunity - Opposing all forms of discrimination, intolerance and disadvantage - Ensuring our workforce reflects the diverse communities of Waltham Forest at all levels. - Providing fair, appropriate, accessible and excellent Services to all. Respecting Diversity is a core Council value. To support the above and reduce the risk of bias in its recruitment activities, the council is operating an anonymous shortlisting process, which hides personal information that can identify individuals until their application has been considered for shortlisting. The council also operates a scheme whereby, for jobs graded up to and including scale SO2, internal candidates are considered first. This includes those candidates who self-identify as having a disability for the purposes of the Disability Confident scheme. For more information, please refer to our recruitment and selection policy
